What will you do when push comes to shove? When everything is on the line, what choices will you make? Who will you choose to trust? Where will you put your faith?

These questions are at the heart of the new supernatural suspense novel Afloat by Christian author Erin Healy. I had already read The Baker’s Wife and The Promise She Keeps by Healy and the description of Afloat grabbed my eye, so I was excited to jump into Afloat when it arrived on my doorstep.

After getting off to a slow start as Healy sets the scene and introduces the cast of characters, Afloat launches into a tale of murder, greed, revenge and love. Danielle Clement is a single mom struggling to raise her son, Simeon. Desperate to make ends meet, she has let real estate developer Tony Dean help her out by providing her a job and a place to live —  the amazing floating condominiums known as Eagle’s Talon. The complex is the dream project for architect Vance Nolan, but his dream is about to become a nightmare. When a sinkhole gives way and the cove is flooded and cut off from the outside world, those left behind are entangled in a battle to survive. Read the rest of this entry »

What would you do if you could feel someone else’s pain? I mean really, physically feel it, not just empathize with them. As a pastor’s wife, Audrey uses her sensitivity to reach out to those in need. When her husband loses his congregation in the wake of a scandal, their family attempts to move forward by reviving a failing bakery. Although she is no longer a pastor’s wife and is now the titular baker’s wife, Audrey continues to use her ability to reach out to those in need.

One foggy morning on the way to the bakery, Audrey and her son crash into a motor scooter. When she gets out of the car to see what happened, she finds lots of blood but no body. The “victim” turns out to be the wife of the police detective/church elder, Sgt. Jack Mansfield, who was behind the baker’s dismissal as pastor. Although there is no evidence linking Audrey to his wife’s disappearance, Jack becomes convinced of their guilt and takes desperate steps hoping to discover the truth. Promise is a young girl with cystic fibrosis who dreams of being a singing star. Chase is an autistic man with an amazing artistic ability who has fallen in love with Promise. Porta is an aging art gallery owner who also happens to be a witch in search of immortality. As different as these three characters may be, their fates and their stories are intertwined.

When Promise survives a series of deadly accidents, Porta becomes convinced that the girl holds the secret to eternal life. Chase senses the devious intentions the witch has in store for the girl he loves and attempts to save her from Porta’s machinations.

I really wanted to like this book, and there were parts of it I really enjoyed. Healy did a great job of using the right words to paint a vivid picture of the people and places she was describing. However, the story never seemed to find its way home. There are too many subplots never resolved, too many questions left unanswered for my taste. As a writer, I understand and respect an author having a story to tell and a path she chooses to take her tale. However, as a reader, I was a little frustrated with the story’s climax.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I give “The Promise She Keeps” a 3.
