In one week, my family and I will be heading south. We will be spending the whole month of July in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Erin’s ex-husband, Ahmed, moved down there a few months ago. He wanted to see his kids for five weeks during the summer and invited all of us to come along. So Erin, Nassem, Emma, Addie and I will leave next Sunday evening on our little adventure.
I am so looking forward to time away. It’s not every day you get an opportunity like this. Luckily, Erin and I are both working from home right now so we are able to get away for such a long period of time. I haven’t been to Florida since I was 8 years old. Since that was almost 30 years ago, I think I’m due a return visit. Also, it’s been six years since I’ve taken a real vacation, so I think I’m really really due a nice break.
I really need a change of scenery. It’s been a crazy, hectic few months. I helped coach Emma’s soccer team, and then her t-ball team. And we had birthday parties for Addie, Erin and Sammie. Throw in Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and a variety of other events and stressful happenings and it’s been something going on constantly, even on the weekends. It will be so nice to get away from it all, see some new sites, and experience some new culture.
I’ll still be working while I am down there. I have some freelance work to do, plus I’ll keep working on my novel. I am guessing I am about 20-25 percent of the way done with it. I’m hoping by the time I get home in August be halfway done with it. I’m sure the change of scenery and break from the everyday routine will help inspire me. I’ve always wanted to sit on the beach and write. Looks like I’ll finally get my chance.
There are so many things I want to do while we are down there. Port Saint Lucie is about two hours north of Miami and two hours south of Orlando, with Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach also nearby, so there are lots of things to go to and places to explore. I really am looking forward to visiting Kennedy Space Center. I love astronomy and outer space and exploring the unknown. I’ve been fascinated by space exploration since I was a kid, so this will be a dream come true.
Also, I love manatees and other marine creatures. There are many different places you can experience these in the area we are visiting. I expect to have lots of pictures to share on here or my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/tim.busbey).
Another love of mine is to drive around and see new things. I’m not talking about tourist attractions. I mean just buildings and parks and bridges and monuments and whatever else is out there that makes up a community, that makes up a culture. I am looking forward to driving through Orlando and Miami and just taking in as much culture as I can during our relatively short visit. I also am looking forward to seeing the sights between Ohio and Florida. We’ll be driving through Charlotte and Savannah and Jacksonville on the way down.
We are considering driving straight through. But with 3 kids scrunched into the back of our Mercury Mariner, we’re not sure how well that is going to work. To alleviate some of the potential strife, we are going to leave late on Sunday and drive through the night. Hopefully, the kids can sleep seven or eight hours and we can get into North or South Carolina before they wake up. It would be great to have that much time without any bickering or stopping every hour to use the bathroom. So we’ll cross our fingers and say some prayers and hope they are feeling really sleepy.
So this week I have some work to finish up before we go, and of course lots of preparations to make to be ready to leave next Sunday night. But it will all be worth it once we get down there one week from today. I am so ready for some fun in the sun with Erin and the kids.
